Finland and Israel have quietly signed a memorandum of understanding extending their bilateral defense material cooperation for a ten-year term.
According to reporting by the Finnish public broadcaster Yle, the pact establishes a framework for joint research, development, and procurement of military equipment, building on an initial protocol first drafted in 2013.
The agreement was approved in writing by the defense ministries of both nations, with Israeli officials characterizing the arrangement as a unique partnership rooted in shared interests. However, the revelation has sparked sharp criticism from domestic opposition leaders in Finland.
Figures such as Green League chair Sofia Virta and Left Alliance chair Minja Koskela condemned the pact as a "historic shame," questioning why the 2024-initiated extension was advanced without broader public or parliamentary fanfare amid mounting international scrutiny over Israel's war crimes in Gaza.
Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen defended the move, stating that maintaining such cooperative frameworks is standard administrative practice for countries engaged in regular defense trade and supports ongoing procurement initiatives, including air-defense projects.
